So let’s talk hair! I’ve been using Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner for a few weeks now and I want to share what I think about it. If you couldn’t already tell, my hair is very important to me. I never cut my hair, I only use heat-styling tools on the weekends to avoid damage, and I try to only use the best hair products available. So if Function of Beauty made it into my hair, obviously it deserves some attention!
Function of Beauty has been on my radar for a while now but with it costing $50 and having not used it or sampled it before, I was pretty hesitant to buy it. But then I realized that the Kevin Murphy Angel shampoo and conditioner that I use costs $72… So $50 sounded a lot better plus I read a lot of really good reviews of Function of Beauty.
So first, I went to the Function of Beauty website and completed my free hair quiz. Here is exactly what I filled out for my quiz:
Hair type: wavy
Hair structure: medium
Scalp moisture: normal
Five hair goals: +Replenish Hair +Strengthen +Hydrate +Color Protection +Lengthen
Formula name: Kelsie
Shampoo color: purple
Conditioner color: purple
Fragrance strength: medium
I chose the 16oz shampoo and conditioner combo and I chose the “just once” option for now. I want to try different formulas to see which one works best for my hair. They also just released a black colored shampoo and conditioner, which I am definitely getting next!! Y’all know that black is my favorite color 😉
The Function of Beauty (FOB) shampoo and conditioner arrived with caps on the top and two screw-on pumps to use. I really liked this because I always bring my own shampoo and conditioner when I go on vacation and pumps always squirt out in my luggage. So I ended up twisting the caps back on for my trip to Colorado.
The FOB products themselves were a lot better than I expected. I try not to get my hopes up when I try something new that I found on the internet because sometimes there can be a lot of hype for something and it ends up under-delivering. But the FOB shampoo and conditioner definitely exceeded my expectations. I saw a huge difference in my hair after just the first use.
FOB is sulfate-free so the shampoo didn’t foam when I used it, which is a good thing. Sulfate is what causes shampoo and other products to get foamy and bubbly, but it also strips your hair of essential oils and will strip your hair’s color (if you color your hair). So sulfate is bad! Since there is no sulfate in FOB products, I had to really wet my hair when I applied the shampoo to get it to move around throughout my hair. All good-quality hair care products are sulfate-free and won’t get all foamy when using it. So if you color your hair frequently but are using a shampoo/conditioner that contains sulfate, you probably find that you have to color your hair more often!
Once out of the shower after the first FOB use, I let my hair air-dry to see what it would do to my natural, un-tampered-with hair. And the words “oh my” actually came out of my mouth when I looked in the mirror. My hair looked amazing!! My hair was really voluminous and bouncy and felt a lot lighter (in weight). I have very long, thick hair so my hair is never light and bouncy. But I could tell that the formula really cleaned my hair and got rid of any grease or dirt or whatever keeps it thick and heavy. I think maybe other shampoos and conditioners will leave a residue that sits on top of my hair after I use it and keeps it thick and heavy. But the FOB must have really absorbed into my hair and cleaned the rest of the bad stuff out, leaving my hair airy and bouncy and very healthy feeling.
I also noticed that my hair was a lot wavier than it normally is. I’m not sure if the “wavy” hair type option that I selected added something to the formula to make it extra wavy, or if it just being lighter and less heavy made my hair more wavy than usual. Whatever it was, it looked awesome and I didn’t have to style my hair because the natural waves looked cute and beachy.
Some of the other reviews that I read about Function of Beauty stated that some people experienced hair loss after using FOB. I didn’t notice any hair loss at all since I started using it. At least not more than normal. My family has very thick, long hair genes and so my hair has always shed like a dog since birth. The people who experienced hair loss might have never used a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner before or it could have been something with their formula that made their hair thin out a little bit.
My FOB instructions said to wash with the FOB products 5-6 times per week but I only wash my hair 2-3 times per week because my hair holds onto moisture really well and my hair will look greasy from conditioner build-up.Overall, I’m very happy with the Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner. I think next time I order, I’m going to change the fragrance strength from medium to strong. I always like my hair smelling really good all of the time. And I’m going to order the black shampoo and gray conditioner if it is still available!
