My boyfriend and his guy friends have a tradition to get together on Tuesday nights for Taco Tuesday and if that isn’t the cutest thing… Well now that I’m living with him, I have officially become part of the permanent guest list, and even a host for that matter.
I had been to a Taco Tuesday before I moved in, when my boyfriend was the only host, and these boys literally just had meat, tortillas, and beer for their Taco Tuesday… No sides, no taco toppings, not even cheese! Granted, it was this really good “fajita meat” from the Mexican Meat Market, so it was legit Mexican tacos and they were delicious. And they actually made Micheladas with the beer. So I guess it was the perfect Taco Tuesday for a group of guys.
But now that I’m a host of Taco Tuesdays, I wanted this one to be special and a little more festive! So, here is what I added to the party:
- Trader Joe’s Fat Free Refried Beans
- Chipotle Copycat Cilantro Lime Rice
- Homemade Salsa w/ chips as an appetizer
- Cilantro and limes to top the tacos
- Cute ass plates
- Cacti as decor
I swear I have never seen salsa disappear so fast in my life… Apparently my homemade salsa was really good?! I’ll post the recipe next time I make it! Probably next Tuesday… And the guys really enjoyed the beans and rice also! I meant for them to be sides like you see at a Mexican restaurant, but they just put the beans and rice right onto their tacos. Whatever floats their boat I guess. *Shrugs*
Here are some Taco Tuesday essentials and some bonus ways to spice up your Taco Tuesday and make you the Hostess with the Mostess:
#1 – Obviously you’ll need tacos! We get these red “fajita meat” tacos from the Mexican Meat Market down the street (perk of living in Houston, Texas I guess!). They’re actually called “fajita meat” but they’re just thin beef marinated in this delicious red sauce. You can also do traditional ground beef tacos, shrimp tacos, fish tacos, chicken tacos (healthier option), veggie tacos (onions, peppers, avocado, mushrooms, cauliflower) for the vegetarian/vegan friends, or even breakfast tacos if you want to switch it up! And if you’re dieting/gluten free you can do corn tortillas, lettuce bowls, or taco salad.
#2 – Appetizers are important if you’re cooking while your guests are over. All of the yummy smells will definitely make them hungry. I made my homemade salsa but you can also do other chips and dips, 7 layer dip, nachos, etc.
#3 – Side dishes are also a good option. Cilantro lime rice or Mexican rice are yummy and also a type of bean dish: refried beans, pinto beans, black beans, charro beans, borracho beans, etc. You can also buy these right out of a bag/can and you don’t need a special recipe for them 😉
#4 – Alcohol!!! Everyone loves a good adult beverage on a Tuesday to get you through the week, am I right?! We had Micheladas, which are like a Mexican Bloody Mary, but with beer! You can buy the Michelada sauce in a bottle and just add it to any light beer. Or you can also do margaritas if you have the mix and tequila…
#5 – Tacos need toppings. Cheese; feta is always my favorite on tacos, or shredded cheese, or cotija cheese! Shredded lettuce, red cabbage, diced tomatoes, diced onions, cilantro, pico de gallo, avocado, or a yummy cream sauce if you’re making fish or shrimp tacos!
#6 – Cute decor will definitely induct you into the hostess with the mostess hall of fame. Cute plates and serveware, cute Mexican-style decor, the possibilities are endless! You could even have Despacito by Justin Bieber on repeat but that might make your guests want to physically harm you… Cacti are all the rave right now and would be perfect decor for Taco Tuesday!
I hope everyone is inspired to have an amazing Taco Tuesday and maybe even make it an excuse to see your friends and/or family every week or every other week!
